Below are you’re training, stretching & nutritional protocols for next week, please review each day closely. If you can’t gain access to the bike for any reason, simply discard the moto protocols and focus on your cross training.

Familiarity Principle

As you review the protocols, keep in mind that your body has adapted and improved both from a strength & endurance stand point.  Many times our mental outlook (i.e. this is going to be hard) is our biggest limiter regarding our true potential as both humans and athletes.  You will notice that once you have completed a particular workout, 99% of the time it wasn’t as “hard” as we made it out to be.  To me, there are two reasons for this: first is what I call the Familiarity Principle and the second is what I call Stress & Release Cycle.  The Familiarity Principle can best be illustrated by how long it feels to drive somewhere for the first time, it seems like it takes forever to cover a mile because you are not “familiar” with the route.  Once you have driven somewhere for the first time, each time you drive there it “feels” that it takes less and less time.

The reason for this is because your mind is familiar and comfortable with the task at hand – think about this from an athletic stand point, your brain (and body) doesn’t like to do anything new.  It is for this reason that your training program is so diversified – to familiarize your body in training what to expect on the open road.  Under the Stress & Release Cycle, we have a tendency to face each workout (and day for that matter) as a “stress” until completed and checked off the to do list (i.e. “release”).  To help you change your perspective, think about each day’s workouts as a building block to the goals of the entire week.  Each week is one block out of a specific training cycle duration that has a larger objective (i.e. increased strength, endurance, lactate tolerance, decreased body fat, etc.).  By preparing properly for each individual workout with food, rest, hydration and warm up, you are able to maximize your productivity of that particular “building block”.

By properly recovering from the workout with a warm down, recovery calories, stretching and trigger point therapy you are establishing the foundation for improvement literally from the inside out.  Remember, the muscle tissue, connective tissue, body fat and organ health is the product of what you have consumed over the last six (6) months.  Consistency in the small details will yield huge dividends in regards to your larger goals and objectives.

Another component of Working Smart, Not Hard, and Avoid Overtraining!

Yours in sport & health,

-Coach Robb, Coaches, and Staff

Thought for the week:

“Strength doesn’t come from what you can do, it comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn’t.”
