As you are setting up your training schedule for the week, stop and think about your upcoming race schedule and ask yourself the following questions:
-
-
- What is the temperature going to be while I am racing?
- What time of day will my race start and approximately when will it finish?
- What will be the most difficult aspect of the race?
- What will my hydration and nutrition strategy look like (specifically what, how much and in what increments)?
-
Now review your projected training schedule and evaluate if you are addressing these significant elements of your race day performance? As you will quickly notice, the logistics of setting your training schedule to address these issues will be dictated by your time management. Though we have previously spoken about this subject as it relates to having enough time to complete your warm up and cool down, adjusting your schedule to train in the heat of the day (testing your hydration and nutrition strategy) will dictate the productivity of your training efforts.
If your personal schedule doesn’t allow for you to train in the heat of the day during the week, then make every effort possible to do so one day over the weekend (Note: refrain from training in the hottest part of the day two days in a row). Like all workouts, the key is absorbing your workout, so weighing yourself pre-post workout along with documenting your food and fluid consumption for the rest of the day will help shed some light on your energy levels the next day. This level of attention to detail is the difference between a good race and a great race, so outline every hour of every day to ensure that you maximize your efforts in training while maintaining balance in every other aspect of your life.
Planning to train, training to race, another tool to help you Work Smart, Not Hard and Avoid Overtraining!
